Ο ζωγράφος Γιόχαν Μποργκ, άνθρωπος με κλονισμένη ψυχική υγεία, πηγαίνει με την έγκυο γυναίκα του Άλμα σε ένα μικρό, σχεδόν ακατοίκητο νησάκι, αναζητώντας ηρεμία και ξεκούραση. Η υγεία του όμως αντί να βελτιώνεται, πάει από το κακό στο χειρότερο. Έχει φοβίες που δεν του επιτρέπουν να κοιμηθεί το βράδυ και γύρω του μαζεύονται όλο και περισσότερες απειλητικές μορφές: οι προσωπικοί του δαίμονες. Την ώρα μετά τα μεσάνυχτα και πριν το ξημέρωμα (την ώρα του λύκου) ο βασανισμένος καλλιτέχνης εξομολογείται στην γυναίκα του τη σκοτεινιά της ψυχής του και τα δαιμόνια του παρελθόντος του.
